Mike Capps of Epic calls Wii a weird virus
Mike Capps is the president of Epic games, a games company made famous by products like the Unreal Tournament series, the Unreal game engine and Gears of War which is expecting a red hot sequel later this year.
Mike was recently quoted in an interview as saying that the Nintendo Wii is like a virus and that nobody every turns in on. His exact words in the interview with IGN.com were:
“It’s a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they’re like, ‘Oh my God that’s so cool, I’m gonna go buy it,”
“So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they’ve showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on.”
“I know, the name. We all say Wii now and never even think about the name anymore. They know what they’re doing and they make money better than anyone else does. As an investor you love ‘em, but as a next-gen console technology maker, they don’t run UE3 and they can’t.”

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think Mr Capps’ comments were not very professional, disrespectful and in a section of the interview it becomes apparent that one of the reasons why he hates the console so much is because it cannot run their video game creation product – The Unreal Engine. The massive success of the Wii seems like a sore to his eyes and a pain to his ears especially because his company cannot profit from it. Some don’t regard the Wii as a “Next Gen” console but I believe it is. With the spiraling cost of video game production on the XBox 360 and especially the Playstation 3 it’s good that game developers have another option. I play all kinds of consoles and all types of games and I can certainly appreciate the role of the wii and I can’t help but see a little bit of me in the Wii…the rebel who goes against the norm, not influenced by my peers while freely doing my own thing.
Gears of War 2
I am looking forward to Gears of War 2 because I have been playing the original Gears of War non-stop since it came out but I will now be looking at the game more thoroughly after Mike’s “cocky” comments.
