Diablo 3 Art Style Controversy

In late June at the Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational in Paris, France concrete information, trailers and screenshots became available for Blizzards popular Action RPG Diablo III. Although all Diablo fans including myself were happy to see a new game in the series coming it seems not everyone was happy with the direction in which the art style of the upcoming Diablo game was taking the franchise. Many chided Blizzard for it’s resemblance to their hot MMORPG World of Warcraft and saw red (pun intended) with all the colours and quirky looking animations displayed in the gamplay footage that followed.

Diehard fans wanted a more darkened world with more creepy colours and traditional lighting effects and quickly created an online petition to voice their aprehension. To date close to 53000 disgruntled fans have signed the petition, but designers of Diablo 3 indicate that the ggame is too far in development to change direction now and have gone to great lengths to explain why they chose such a look for the game.

I for one don’t see what the big deal is about really. I am excited about the new game and although I didn’t play the first Diablo I remember playing the second game for quite a while. The new game looks great, it’s bloody, mature and looks like fun to play and I can’t wait to get my hands on it…hopefully next year.
