Mastermind: World Conqueror

For the last 2 days I have playing an hilarious, addictive and simple flash game on Kongragate called Mastermind: World Conqueror. It all started with me being bored at work and decided to try out a simple flash game online, I decided to check out one of the popular games right now on Kongregate and Mastermind was the first one to catch my eye.

The goal of Mastermind: World Conqueror is to basically as the title says conquer the world. With a mixture of strategy and rpg elements you control your minions, defend you base, attack, kill, sabotage and steal your way to your ultimate goal. The main thing that kept me interested in this game is it’s hilarious cut scenes that are played out when you undertake certain events in the game, the humour was mostly good and the game is a breeze to play.

There isn’t much replay value but it’s the perfect game to clear your head while taking a break from work.

2009 Bafta Awards – Video Games

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts gives out various awards each year but I am usually just interested in the video games category. Fifteen video game Baftas were on offer with Grant Theft Auto IV and Call of Duty 4 being nominated for the most. Super Mario Galaxya nd COD4 were the winners of the biggest awards.

FIFA 09 filled with improvements and tweaks

As I have stated before the FIFA franchise of football (soccer) games is very popular here in Jamaica and from my review of Fifa 2008 you can see that I enjoyed playing it, especially with friends. FIFA 2009 was released a few weeks ago and ever since the demo was released in September about a month before the release of the full game in October I’ve been playing it.

Fifa 09 improves upon and tweaks many of Fifa 08’s gameplay elements. I love the realism of FIFA 09, the increased difficulty, the graphical improvements, player animation and ball physics. The goal keeper is no longer completely retarded but he has passed this on to the newly introduced referee,who now is my biggest complaint in the game. He is very card happy and calls like off side take too long to be called, I also hate when I get one of my players fouled but manage to recover and score a goal only to have the game reset halfway down the field and my goal disallowed.

Custom tactics, celebrations, in match team mentality adjustment and improved first touch mechanics are all some of FIFA 09’s improvements and I can see myself playing the xbox 360 version of this game for just as long as I played the last edition with my friends.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a puzzle game that I picked up a few months back that I have been playing on and off since. Professor Layton and the Curious Village is an adventure game with a story along that is moved along as the player completes puzzles spread between the wide cast of characters.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village follows Professor Layton and his assistant Luke as they are employed by a rich Baroness to search the village of St. Mystere for the “Golden Apple”, a treasure claimed to be left by the late Baron Reinhold.

Meet Professor Layton

This game is the perfect companion for when you have a few minutes that you want to relax while excercising the mind on puzzles. Some of the puzzels are simple while others will keep you up at nights wondering what the answer could be and even jotting down notes and clues on paper. I especially like the short animated cut scenes that help tell the story and the overall simplistic style of the artwork. If you are looking puzzle game on the Nintendo DS with an interesting story, sound and addictive gameplay Professor Layton and the Curious Village is the game for you. Plus this game is only the first game of what is expected to be a trilogy of Professor Layton titles for the Nintendo DS.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

It’s no secret that I love strategy games that require more from a gamer than just how fast they can mash a button or swing a nunchuck and for this reason it’s no surprise that I am a fan of Nintendo’s Advance Wars series of games. Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is the latest game in the series and was released earlier this year for the Nintendo DS. I picked up a copy of the game in late February when I snatched one of the special edition triforce engraved Nintendo DSs bundled with a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

This is a Hard War

Days of Ruin is a very difficult game and that will be a good or bad thing depending on the type of gamer you are and what you expect, for me it was a good thing especially now seeing that so many games are been numbed down so that they will have a mass market appeal. The campaign takes place over 60+ missions half of which are training missions not directly affection the storyline, at first I welcomed the way they incorporated the training missions to help understand the new units and strategies available in the game but after a while it got annoying and I just started to skip most of them. The story retarded and gets stranger after each battle…boy is saved by man…man becomes boy mentor…boy finds strange half dead girl in a post apocalyptic world…boy falls in love, mix in waring superpowers, a mad scientist, an impotent general and an out break of a biological plague and there you have the story.

Days of Ruin definitely is more hardcore looking with a newish, darkened art style while still remaining recognizable by Advance War veterans. One of the best features of Days of Ruin is it’s online support, I have spent countless hours playing online via Nintendo wifi, building and trading maps, for people like me who can’t find anyone to play with in my immediate area to play with this is a godsend. Days of Ruin is feature rich, challenging and breathes new life into the Advance War series if you haven’t played it yet check it out if you have already played it there is a 90% chance you are still enjoying it up to this day.

FIFA 2008, a very addictive game

Electronic Art’s long running and very popular FIFA football series of games is very popular here in Jamaica. Next to track and field football is the next biggest sport here (R.I.P. cricket and the West Indies) and when all other kinds of video game are taboo or looked down upon a FIFA football game can be found everywhere, just the other day I was at a barbershop watching big, grown, thug acting guys scream like schoolgirls during an excited 4 player FIFA 2008 match.

Footballing Frenzy

Every well known team is present and accounted for in FIFA 2008. Every player is modeled after their real life counterparts especially star players like Ronaldinho, Malouda, Rooney, Messi, Tevez and Cech. I love the game and I can’t get enough of it and it has taken over from Gears of War as my primary multiplayer game at the Area 51 arcade. With tones of modes, excellent gameplay mechanics and competition in almost limitless supply I see myself playing lots of FIFA 2008 for many weeks to come.

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz

Recently Jamaica’s national football team kicked off their South Africa 2010 campaign and got back the coach that got us to the world cup finals in France 1998; Rene Simoes, so football is on a high here in Jamaica. I must say, win, lose or draw I am jumping on the reggae boyz bandwagon and they have my support 100%, I’ll be going to a few of their matches and following the road to South Africa 2010 campaign closely.

Assassins Creed is Overhyped

Assassins Creed was one of the most highly anticipated games of 2007. I will start by saying that it doesn’t live up to all the hype and to me is not an “exceptional” game but in today’s console gaming world even high budget, heavily promoted games like this will come across as “regular” when put side by side with other great games like Bioshock, Halo 3 and Mass Effect.

Story and Experience

The game follows the ancestor of Desmond Miles who is kidnapped and brought to an unknown facility. The ancestor of Desmond is named Altair aka “the flying one” and the main game begins in the 12th century during the heights of the Christian crusades in the middle east. Three huge and uniquely designed cities, Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus are where most of the game takes place as Altair goes around assassinating targets while slowly unfolding the story. I don’t want to get too much into detail but by the end of the adventure there are enough twists in the story and other interesting developments that make me really like the story of this game. This game is a true next generation experience, the sound, graphics and presentation are of the highest quality. The busy streets, engrossing battles, interesting dialog and originality of this game does well to engross the player into the game.

Real Life Infidel

I for one really enjoyed when the guards and other characters in the game shouted “Infidel” at Altair while doing various actions because Infidel is the my gamer name and my friends kept calling me Infidel with a 12th century middle eastern accent whenever they saw me playing the game. Check out this game – rent it, buy it or borrow it, it’s kind of short but worth the experience and from the way it ended I know there will be a sequel.

Bioshock is worth every penny

Many argue otherwise but to me Bioshock is the best video game to be released in 2007 in terms of a single player experience. 2007 was a wonderful game for gaming, probably the best year ever, I found myself bombarded with new release after new release especially in the second half of the year, but very few even came close to fun I had (and still have) playing Bioshock.

About the Game

Bioshock is set in the 1960’s in an underwater city secretly built in the middle of Atlantic ocean. The city was build by a rich tycoon named Andrew Ryan who had grand ideas of a land free of political and religious oppression, a land which he also nicknamed “Eden”. Stem cell research from a new species of sea slug resulted in the creation of “Adam” powered by a special but hard to manufacture serum called “Eve” which was used to create “plasmid” which offered various upgrades to any regular human which included everything from eye colour changes, to my personal favourite…shoot fire from your hands ^_^.

Playing Bioshock at the Area 51 Arcade in Kingston

The story of the game is well written and the way in unfolds as the player plays through the games is nothing short of magnificent. Deception, betrayal, moral based decisions, death and more all litter the plot which then literally submerges the player into the world of Rapture and it’s inhabitants. Being the wimp that I am, I couldn’t play this game for extended periods because my senses were so heightened and I was so tense, wondering what monstrosity was around the next corner. Do you have an Xbox 360 or a capable PC? Buy and play Bioshock, it’s worth every penny!

Finally got around to getting a site up on this domain I registered so many months ago. So much work left to do getting everything in line, so many pages to write, settings to configure and plans to put in motion.

Expect this page to be a little rough around the edges for a few weeks as I get everything streamlined. I need to:

Get a logo done
create relevant categories for my posts
create an about page – work in progress
create a contact page and add a form
list the consoles I own and the specs of my current PC
introduce myself “properly”
add a fav icon to the site
post about this site on my other two blogs
customize the layout, colours and format of the site
brainstorm some ideas for content and presentation
Start networking with existing gamers who have blogs
create a proper sponsor and advertising page
other things I am forgetting write now or don’t realize I should do yet.
